Piezo or Ultrasonic Rhinoplasty Surgery
What is a Piezo Rhinoplasty?
Piezo rhinoplasty, also known as ultrasonic rhinoplasty, is the latest advance in cosmetic nasal surgery and is a technique that reshapes the nose with greater precision and minimal trauma. Piezo technology differs from traditional rhinoplasty in that it uses high-frequency ultrasonic waves to refine bone structure while preserving soft tissue and cartilage. This approach results in less swelling, reduced bruising, and a faster recovery, making it a preferred choice for patients seeking natural, refined results.
At Real Plastic Surgery, all piezo rhinoplasty patients will be under the care of our founder, Mr Naveen Cavale, who is a consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon and is internationally recognised for his expertise in reconstructive surgery. Why Consider Rhinoplasty?
There are pros and cons to piezo rhinoplasty. While it mostly requires open rhinoplasty, which is more invasive than the closed approach, its high precision allows for more refined results, making it a highly effective technique.
- High-precision with less trauma: Piezo rhinoplasty allows for more precise bone reshaping, reducing overall trauma to the nose. The advanced technique uses an electric current to create high-frequency oscillations at the tip of the instrument, which sculpts the nasal bone with precision. In some rhinoplasty cases, this may mean that the bone doesn’t need to be broken in the same way as with a more traditional approach.
- Faster recovery time: Because piezo rhinoplasty reduces overall trauma to the surrounding tissue, the recovery process is faster than traditional rhinoplasty, which appeals to many patients.
Treatment Time
Between 2 and 2.5 hours. We use a general anaesthetic and you can usually go home on the same day.
Downtime
10 - 14 days off work.
Reasonable Mobility
We recommend patients begin gentle movement around two days after surgery. Light activities such as walking, climbing stairs, and carrying out basic daily tasks are encouraged to support circulation and recovery.
Sport & Exercise
You can begin exercising and doing more strenuous activities at six weeks.
Driving
Most patients can resume driving two weeks after surgery, provided they feel comfortable.
Shower
You can shower the day after surgery, but it's important to keep any wounds and dressings clean and completely dry.
Full Recovery
Between six months to a full year. While most swelling subsides within the first few months, subtle changes and final results may continue to develop over time.
Maintenance
Rhinoplasty provides a permanent solution. It can be combined with other surgical and non-surgical procedures when looking to rejuvenate the appearance and reduce signs of ageing.
Reason for doing this?
To address aesthetic and structural concerns such as dorsal humps, nasal deviation, asymmetry, or disproportionate nasal size. The procedure also aims to improve nasal contour and function, including correction of breathing difficulties caused by internal nasal obstruction (e.g. deviated septum).

The Patient Journey: Piezo Rhinoplasty
The initial rhinoplasty consultation lasts about 30 minutes, usually face-to-face with Mr. Cavale at the REAL Clinic in Battersea. Virtual consultations are also available, but a final in-person meeting is required before finalising the plan. If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to book additional consultations at no extra cost to ensure you’re confident in your decision. It’s imperative that patients feel comfortable and confident in their decisions, so Mr. Cavale encourages all of his patients to speak to their consultant and close support network before making their final decision.
After surgery, you’ll need someone to collect you from the clinic and stay with you overnight. If you live more than an hour from Battersea, we recommend staying in a local hotel for a night with someone in case of emergencies and travelling home the next day. If coming from abroad, plan for two to four weeks in the UK, depending on procedures and your case. Aftercare includes virtual nursing contact via WhatsApp or phone and a follow-up visit a week later to remove dressings, splints, and stitches. Most patients return for a six-week check-up, but final results may take six months to fully settle. If you have concerns, please contact Mr. Cavale at any time.
What to Expect on the Day
Ultrasonic or piezo rhinoplasty surgery is done as a day procedure, and you’ll be home the same day. It is performed with you fully asleep, under TIVA general anaesthesia.
This procedure can be undertaken for an open rhinoplasty (incisions are made externally) and replaces instruments such as chisels and rasps to reshape the bone. Instead, a special device is used that delivers high-frequency ultrasonic waves directly to the nasal bone.
When you wake up, you will have a cast and tape over the top of your nose and some light packing inside the nose; we do not like to use rigid packing or splints, as these can be very painful to remove. The packing inside your nose is removed before you go home and the stitches and the cast are removed a week later. You will be able to shower the next day, but the face needs to be kept dry for a week. To find out more about rhinoplasty recovery, read our article on rhinoplasty recovery tips.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a piezo rhinoplasty cost?
The advanced technology, specialised training, and high-cost ultrasonic equipment make piezo rhinoplasty more expensive than traditional rhinoplasty. Costs in London range between £10,000 and £15,000 for full treatment. View our price guide for more information.
What are the risks of a piezo rhinoplasty?
Like any surgical procedure, there are some risks to having piezo rhinoplasty surgery, including infection, swelling, scarring, haematoma, and asymmetry. Mr Cavale will go through more specific risks and benefits during your consultation
Who is a good candidate for piezo rhinoplasty?
Piezo rhinoplasty is particularly effective for patients looking for natural results that enhance their facial features without looking overdone or artificial. The advanced technology allows for high-precision bone reshaping to ensure subtle improvements.
How long is recovery after piezo rhinoplasty?
Recovery after piezo rhinoplasty varies from person to person, but generally, you can expect to take up to two weeks off work for initial healing, with swelling and bruising most noticeable during this period. More strenuous or physical exercise can usually resume after 4-6 weeks, however, you may not see full results until the six-month mark due to swelling, and sometimes a full recovery can take up to 18 months, depending on the individual.
